Chanco on the James is a retreat center for youth and adults as well as one of the longest running summer camp programs in Virginia. It is situated on 125 acres of woods surrounded by natural wildlife along the James River.
Our location in Surry County, Virginia is a short ferry ride away from historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. An outdoor ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, Chanco is a spiritual place for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.

Chanco is a perfect location for church retreats, corporate groups, youth programs, and families who want a remote location to relax, learn, and connect. Sandy beaches, excellent dining, and peaceful accommodations will make you feel like you are staying at a private resort.
We also offer an ACA accredited summer camp program for youth ages 8-16. Our residential camp offers a wealth of traditional activities, including high and low ropes courses, zip lining, archery, pool activities, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing, as well as nature instruction and arts and crafts classes. Meeting new friends, learning new things, living away from home in Christian community all make camp a valuable experience for youth of all ages.
Food Service Manager:
Chanco on the James, is looking for a chef to serve as head cook and kitchen manager. Our year-round conference menu includes both home-style items and more refined entrees, served buffet-style. Group sizes will range from as small as 10 to as many as 100. We also serve meals of up to 200 people family-style during an 8 week traditional summer camp program. This a full-time, year-round, salaried position with with benefits. The salary range is $35,000 – $40,000 depending on experience.
The successful candidate will have experience in
1. Food preparation,
2. Inventory management and ordering, and
3. Scheduling and managing staff.
