You can make the difference. An experience at Chanco is often transformative for our youth with camper families noting increased confidence, self-reliance and newfound friendships. For some, a Chanco experience is the only Christian community they will experience all year. This year, Chanco received scholarship requests totaling about $23,000 which is double the amount requested last year! We have received numerous applications from diocesan youth along with funding requests for ten Boy’s Home and ten ForKids (an organization that supports homeless youth and families). Our endowed scholarship fund proceeds provide only a little over $4,000 of the $23,000 that is required to not turn away a single child who desires a Chanco experience but cannot afford one. Please prayerfully consider how your parish’s outreach committee, vestry, a “Chanco scholarship Sunday” loose plate offering, and/or individual donations may help make a Chanco experience a reality for one of these many campers requesting assistance. We cannot do this without your help.
Last year, Chanco was pleased to be able to provide scholarships for youth from both Boy’s Home and ForKids along with numerous scholarships for diocesan youth. As our endowed scholarship funds did not meet all the need, we were only able to do this with generous gifts from donors. The transformative nature of a Chanco experience is perhaps best described by Rachel Newnam from ForKids after their campers’ experiences with us last summer:
“As you all at Chanco on the James well know, camp is an incredible experience for any child. At ForKids, we know that for a homeless child, it’s even more than that – it’s life changing. For them, camp brings first time experiences that other children find commonplace like learning to swim, to canoeing, to riding a zip line and much more. From sleepless nights spent in shelters to nights spent in cars and on the streets these campers have not had a fairy tale childhood. Each year, our staff continue to be amazed at the newfound confidence, focus and determination the kids return from camp with. I wanted to let you know that because of you all, this years’ campers’ lives have been changed forever.”
