Thank you Jim Sitzler

The Chanco Board of Directors acknowledges that during the recent restructuring announcement, we were remiss in providing ample recognition of Jim Sitzler’s service to Chanco on the James.  The Chanco Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Sitzler for his years of service and ministry to Chanco.  Jim deserves to be honored for his four years of time, energy, love and dedication to Chanco’s camp programming.  We know that Jim Sitzler’s heart is for Chanco’s success and we are grateful for all of his efforts that have helped bring Chanco to a new generation of campers and a new generation of ministry.

Jim Sitzler took on the role of Camp Director in 2008, and provided leadership through five summer camp seasons.  In his first summer as camp director, Chanco received ACA (American Camp Association) accreditation and our camp numbers grew in 2008 to the highest they had been since 2003.  During Jim’s tenure, the number of campers grew from 347 in 2007 to 532 in 2012.  Chanco received two ACA accreditation with high scores and also earned the distinction of “Best Summer Camp” as voted by Virginia Living magazine readers (May 2012 Best Of edition).  Jim worked with the Camp Chanco Alumni Association to host annual alumni reunions and work weekends and helped to build a bridge of support from the alumni.

Jim has often acknowledged that the spirit of Chanco is the people of Chanco – all of them – the campers, the counselors, the staff, the alumni, the conference guests, the volunteers, the families who call Chanco “home”.  He has embodied the fact that Chanco is not just one of us, it is all of us, and most importantly, it is God working through us in this beloved place.  As Jim said to his staff at Staff Night in 2011, “The truth is that this place is nothing, this property is dirt and sticks.  It is God’s Holy Spirit that lives within you and among you that gives this place its magic.  This is the sprk that makes the difference and the magic that keeps our campers returning summer after summer.”

Chanco’s success today is due to the leadership and effort of may people over many years.  Jim has been a large part of that sucucess for the last four years and we give thanks for his minsitry and service.
